First post here.
Well, amongst other things, I have quite some knowledge about writing Blender addons and core code, having written EWOCprojects tools and the preselection build. I last had the idea, as creative contribution to the BBUG, we could start a discussion on what features/addons we would like to see for Blender (not big things but like modeling tools, a new compositor node, or any other doable concept) and then I/we together could choose one thing and I would program it for real either as an addon(preferably) or even a real Blender core thing (which would then be included in the EWOCprojects preselect build, and, God knows, maybe even make it into trunk). Like, made in Belgium!
If a success, maybe we could do even more of these after, but lets start off with some ideas on what could be done first…!
Hi @paleajed and welcome to the Bbug.
I think it’s a great idea. Thank you for the initiative : )
Personaly I wouldn’t mind a few improvements either the VSE or in the Script editor.
For the VSE, @vincentg convinced me of the importance of a bin which store all assets and movie so they can be quickly drag’n dropped on the VSE timeline.
Quick proposal -> in the VSE, a new panel opended by the usual T shortcut which you can use to load file, multiple files or whole directories. You can then simply drag an asset from this list (with the usual search & sort option) to the timeline to add a strip and so on. Ideally the asset list should be saved in the .blend file.
In the Script editor, I would really like more functionality.
Basically anything from sublimetext would be welcome ^__^
But mostly syntax folding, better auto completion or a function/method & variables list for quick navigation would already be rad.
Or, in the BGE, I think a new actuator which manage texture animation would please a lot of people.
Glad if any of those idea strike your fancy otherwise, I’ll come with something else. No worry

+1 for the VSE. Not sure that drag and drop is possible because it is hardcoded at some point: the outliner drag and drop to the 3d view for example, but the Node Wrangle addon did something awesome inside node editor itself, so maybe we can imagine something good anyway!
(I’ve just even realized that there is no T shortcut inside the VSE)
In the same kind of idea, I would like to have a node group library that can read a folder with .blend files that contains node groups, and use them directly in any projects. With a versioning system that would be perfect.
I’d like to have also some specific nodes I’m using in other software that I’m sure we could have in Blender. For example, one of the most usefull one is the softclip node of Nuke which just apply a logarithmic compression to the values of the RGB channels. One other that can be very usefull is a node that rotates the normal/position pass. I did it with lot of math nodes but it’s very slow to compute, maybe with one single python node, it will be faster?
And finally, I’ve begun to write a script that visualise the Mask ID pass into different colors and creates the right ID mask nodes when object inside image editor is selected. It works, but again, I’m not a pro coder and it’s running slow, almost impossible to use it on big renders like 2k images. If it can be speed-up, It would be awesome!
VSE drag and drop would be “rather” easy to implement as a core feature I suppose. Never use the VSE though, so should do some research on it. :(|) Implementation details could be discussed here if I’d decide to go forward with this.
Logarithmic compression of the RGB channels? Could you point me to a website with some math theory on this?
What do you mean exactly by rotation of the normal/position pass?
Do show me the Mask ID script, I’d take a look for sure. @vincentg : we seem to have a common interest in scripting for Blender, maybe we should get in touch some more…?
Thanks for the info (I didn’t know that) but still the advantage of a bin isn’t drag’n drop but ease of use, organization and productivity.
btw I liked your ‘How to teach Blender to your GF’ ^^

Even without drag and drop, a footage list inside folder and sub-folder with a button “add to sequence” on the selected footage would be very nice. Drag and drop is a plus but it’s not really important.
That’s the only missing feature why I’m not using Blender for editing, this and a decent text editor for video overlay. For those who are interested, I’m using Kdenlive which is not bad at all but I’d like to use Blender for this task because it is cross-platform and way more stable.
