- [3D] Autodesk to go subscription-based only
As in ‘rental’ : stop to pay and you can’t even use to software anymore.
I don’t know the numbers (whether or not it hurts the sales) but a lot of peoples I know are still pissed with Adobe Cloud…
Well, at least, the shareholders are happy I suppose.
And as usual for a US company, it’s about 40% more expensive here in Europe.

Yeah maybe (Let’s hope so).
But, at the very least, more angry and dissatisfied customers will be fleeing to Modo, C4D or Houdini.
Anything but Autodesk, that’s for sure.
Just like a while ago with the ‘backstabbing’ of the XSI users.
Autodesk always manage to show how much they care for their customers IMO >:)

The target of Autodesk is not the freelance that pays sometime a license. Their target is companies and they are not so crazy : it will be more expensive for companies to hire people to do again the pipeline development that was already done for Maya and tell to everyone in the team (100, 300, 500 people or more by company) to use new tools they don’t know yet than “just” pay for the subscription and keep using it making money anyway.
Sad… but in my opinion, that’s what is going to happen, at least in the few next years.
It’s not really like XSI because Maya’s not dead and will continue to update.

Shareholders will be happy, that’s for sure. It’s corporate at his finest, like Micro$oft and Adobe, A. let everyone but big companies crack their software ; it always increase the userbase. Most if not all Autodesk products are even free for students and teachers.
But with this new model, it’s obvious that even less freelance will pay their software as it is more expensive than before.
For companies, well I’m not sure. of course some will do as you said but also a lot peoples don’t like to upgrade a software mid-production. Some even use a older version, just to stay away from the ‘bugfest’ of a new release.
If it’s the same with Adobe CC, a lot of small businesses won’t make enough money to upgrade all the time.
Finally, the cloud always bring more problems than solutions for those kinds of pipeline.
The 3D industry always was a tiny fraction of Autodesk profit anyway… It’s not like they care IMO.

> for sure and that’s great if they go for Blender but honestly, is there a lot of freelance that pays their licenses? I wasn’t paying mine when I did freelance job in Maya for some agencies. In all places I worked, I met just one guy who did pay all his licenses (XSI by the way…). Just one!

> does it mean that it will be automatically updated? I suppose they can keep using “stable” version to the end of their project/year or something like that. If not, indeed, it could kill Autodesk but I suppose they thought about all possibilities.
I have to say that I hate all about cloud subscription things… and Autodesk, their philosophy as much as their softwares themselves. But like I said, they are not crazy, they know what they’re doing.

From what I heard, yes it will upgrade automatically like Adobe Creative Cloud.
It need to be confirmed though just to be sure.
Well, capitalism search only to increase profit whether or not this benefit the customer is murkier indeed.
Customers also aren’t crazy…
